Reading Your JPS meter

It's very important in todays rising cost of electricity to learn to read your meter. This information is put on this page so that participants in the programme can learn to read their JPS meter. Participants can also as a part of their service, teach others to read their meters.

The picture above is a picture of a JPS meter. Now to read the meter lets start by identifying the five dials. Around each dial you notice the numbers 0 to 9.

  1. Identify the dial on the right side of the meter. This dial seems to be pointing to 1
  2. The next dial has just past the number eight. It means therefore that this dial has not yet made a complete turn from 0 back to 0 therefore the first dial has not yet reach 1. The first dial would be read as 0.
  3. The second dial has just passed eight and has not reached nine therefore this dial should be read as 8. Your reading so far is 08.
  4. Dial three has passed 5 but has not yet reached 6, therefore this dial is read as 5. Our numbers so far reading from the right side of the meter is 085.
  5. Dial 4 seems to be pointing to 3. Because dial five is now pointing to 1 it means therefore that dial 4 now reads 3. Reading the dials from the right side of the meter we now have 0853 up to dial 4.
  6. Dial 5 is on 1 therefore your reading would be 08531. The reading is 8531 kWh (Kilowatt hours). That is eight hundred and fifty-three kilowatthours.

Note that if dial 5 was on nine rather than on 1, then the reading for dial 4 would be 2. A kilowatt hour is 1000 kilowatt hours. If for example you have an iron and the wattage is 1200, this means that in an hour the iron will use 1.2 kW in that hour. For example if you iron 3 hours each week then you would end up using aproximately 14.4 KWh each month.

It is very important to know the wattage of equipment when you buy such equipment.

Low Energy Devices

It's very important that you purchase a refridgerator that is energy efficient. The rubber seals around the doors of old refrigerations crystalize after awhile and therefore cool air seeps out of the refrigerator when it is closed. These seals should be replaced after.

For residential customers you are charged JAD5.747 for the first 100 kWh used and 10.068 for kWh about 100 kWh.
