JANE

JANE (Jamaica Annual National Expedition) was held during this summer in Gordon Town. Students from a number of schools participated in the camp. For the first time we got funding from Government for our camp. JSIF (Jamaica Social and Investment Fund) gave JAD350,000 to cover expenses. Receipts will be submitted to JSIF cover this amount. A further JAD150,000 will be paid by JSIF to cover the other expenses.

Participants were exposed to

  1. Etiquette and Grooming -Former Miss World Lissa Hanna
  2. Self Defence – JDF Personnel
  3. Dancing, speech and drama – Excelsior College Students
  4. First Aid – St. Johns Ambulance
  5. Map reading – DEAJ Leaders
  6. Team Building – DEAJ Leaders
  7. Conflict resolution – Dispute Resolution Foundation
  8. Environmental Appreciation –National Environment and Planning Agency

We will apply for funding from JSIF next year so that we can subsidize the Jamaicans who will be attending CASC next year.

Thanks to Regional Director Beverly Huey-Stewart and Field Officer Prince McNeish who were in charge of the camp and to volunteer Mrs McClure who prepared the initial JSIF proposal. Thanks also to the NEC members for their support for this project and thanks to all our leaders for running another successful camp.

Participants enjoyed their expeditions in the Blue Mountains, their trips to Hellshire and to Dunns River Falls and also the various training programmes.

SCHOOLS’ BLOOD DRIVE

The Blood Bank will be using our leaders and participants to assist them in a blood drive which runs from September to December of this year. Prizes will be offered for schools from which students donate the most blood. Prizes include television sets, book vouchers, I-pods and other prizes.

SERVICE DAY

Service Day will be on Saturday, November 15. We are considering having our participants assist in distributing pamphlets to young people across the island about unhealthy sexual lifestyles on our National Service Day.

ANNIVERSARY SERVICE

Sunday November 9, our annual church service will take place at Hope Gospel Assembly Church in Liguanea. The service starts at 10:00 am.

LEADERS ON TALL SHIP VENTURE

Our Trustees have sponsored two Assessors, Floyed Reid and Fabian Graham to participate in a sailing venture out of St. Lucia. They should be back in the island on February 21. We expect them to represent Jamaica well and to learn from this once in a life time experience which we are sure they will be happy to share with the family when they return.
